Lucy Hoffman Shockley Obituary
Lucy Hoffman Shockley, surrounded by her beloved family — husband of 29 years Robert, children Sara, Robert and Matthew and pet Hunter — passed away on December 3rd in Cary, North Carolina. She was 55.
Lucy was predeceased by her father Joseph V. Hoffman and birth mother Jean Egbert Hoffman (Cincinnati, OH), her paternal grandparents William C. and Sara P. Hoffman (Cranbury, NJ) and maternal grandparents Arthur J & Ann M Davies (Cincinnati), uncle and aunt Arthur and Shirley Davies (Cincinnati). She is survived by mother Phyllis D Hoffman (Cincinnati), brother Joseph V. Hoffman Jr.(Cincinnati), brother Andrew D. Hoffman, sister in-law Bithiah Carter and niece Lillianna (Milton, MA), sisters-in law Lynne S. Wingard (Charlie) (Yazoo City, MS) and Clare Shockley (Bishopville, MD) Lucy graduated from Vanderbilt University (B.A. 1984) where she met Robert and they began dating in 1983. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority and Chairman of Planning Committee for Parents Weekend. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Law (J.D. 1987) where she was a member of Law Review. Lucy earned a Master of Library Science degree from Southern Connecticut State University in 1993. She worked as an attorney and a law librarian before leaving the workforce to raise her children. Lucy was committed to community service and a strong supporter of our public school system. She volunteered for the PTSA, ending her service as PTSA President at Athens Drive High School. She was an active parent and leader in both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was an enthusiastic soccer mom, room mom and field trip participant. Lucy loved reading and books and her volunteering extended to assisting in the school libraries. A memorial service will be held in Cincinnati at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial donations to the Duke Cancer Institute or to Girls Scouts or Boy Scouts. Friends and neighbors are also invited to join the family’s “We Love Lucy” team on March 25, 2017 for the Duke Crush Colorectal Cancer 5K Run/Walk, which benefits the Duke Cancer Institute. Lucy participated in the 2016 event. |
