Good Afternoon, this is Steve Mares, principal of Athens Drive Magnet High School with announcements for the upcoming week. A copy of these announcements will be posted on our school website, emailed and texted to our school families, and emailed to the Athens Drive PTSA email group.

I hope you all received my voice message that I sent this morning where I shared information regarding an incident we had at school. As I had stated in that message, several of our students received an airdropped message that threatened violence at our school. Please know that we immediately began working to investigate and ensure the safety of our students, staff, and visitors. I appreciated the way our students and staff responded to our instructions, and after we felt like the threat was not credible, we finished the day in a positive manner. Please understand that we take all threats seriously, and we do pursue any hoax threats with criminal prosecution. Please know that the safety and well-being of our students is of the highest priority for my staff and me. We take our responsibilities very serious, and we want you to know that we care passionately about ensuring the safety of our students every day.

Please remember that Sunday, November 11^th, is Veterans Day. Our students will not have school on Monday, November 12^th, in honor of this holiday. No school for students and staff on Monday, November 12^th. I would ask that we all take time this weekend and on Monday to reflect on the incredible sacrifices that our Veterans, both active and retired, have made serving our country. For our parents and family members who are Veterans, I thank you very much and honor you for your service.

Parents, please remember that Report Cards were sent home today so please be expecting your student to share them with you this afternoon. We have already begun a new Quarter, so let’s encourage our students to take on the Second Quarter with a renewed commitment to academic excellence!

A huge congratulations to our Men’s Soccer Team for winning their Second and Third Round Playoff games this week! We are now in the final 8 in the State. The Fourth Round Playoff game will be played tomorrow, Saturday, November 10^th at Green Hope High School. It would be great to have a large showing of Athens fans to support our student athletes!

I would like to give a huge “Thank You” to all of parents, staff, and students who helped us prepare for and share information about Athens Drive Magnet High School at the Magnet Fair last Saturday. We had a lot of interest shown in our school and it was wonderful to provide information about The Drive to prospective students and families. We also had staff from a school in another District visit us this week to see our program and learn from us as they are starting a similar Magnet Program. We do have a fantastic school family, and it was wonderful to be able to share the great things going on at The Drive!

Our Magnet Coordinator, Ms. Tonya Hinton is coordinating our Magnet Tours for families interested in finding additional information out about Athens Drive Magnet High School. I am proud that our Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform at the North Carolina Music Educators Conference in Winston-Salem on Monday, November 12^th, at 11:00 a.m. in the Benton Convention Center. This is an exceptional honor for our band program and school as they will be performing for an audience of N.C. music educators. It is the 4th time that our Wind Ensemble has performed at this conference in 12 years—quite a record and quite an honor!

We will hold our Powder Puff football game on Tuesday, November 13^th, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Stadium.

Wednesday night, November 14^th, beginning at 6:30 p.m., we will have our Winter Sports Parent Night meeting. If you have a student athlete playing a Winter Sport, we ask that you please attend this meeting to get important general information about Athens Drive sports and then sport specific information from our coaches during individual team breakout meetings. Prior to our Winter Sports Parents Night meeting, we will be honoring those students who have signed National Letters of Intent for athletic scholarships. I am excited for our students and their families to celebrate these achievements with our school family!

Our Athens Drive Theatre Department proudly presents our fall play, Football Romeo, this coming week. The Play will be held on Thursday, November 15^th and Friday, November 16^th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. The performance lasts approximately two hours with a 15-minute intermission. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $7.00. Please come out to support the nearly 50 students that have worked tirelessly to make this show special and enjoy the beauty of theatre as only passionate high school students can deliver!

We will be hosting Reality of Money simulation on Thursday, November 15^th in the Main Gym. This financial interactive simulation, sponsored by State Employees Credit Union and the Athens Drive Business Alliance, is designed to help students understand basic household budgeting and decision making. Upper level Career and Technical Education classes, Work Force Learning classes, and Civics and Economic students will experience the real-life costs associated with their choices as they assume the role of an adult.

We will be celebrating Literacy in a special way this coming week at The Drive. On Tuesday, November 13^th, our students will have the opportunity to hear from Ms. Georgia McBride, a Publisher, Business Owner, and Author. On Thursday, November 15^th, Mr. Brian Dawson, a Radio Personality/Host will be a guest speaker. And then on Friday, November 16^th, we will have our STEM Wars during Third and Fourth Periods in the Gym. We are also welcoming students to Dress Up For Their Love of Literacy for our STEM Wars and Spirit Week for Books: Tuesday, Comic Con versus Favorite Book Character; Wednesday, Protagonist versus Antagonist; Thursday, Music Genre Day; and Friday, Sci-Fi versus Fantasy (Star Wars versus Harry Potter, STEM Wars Celebration). We are looking forward to sharing the work of our students, providing learning opportunities for our students, and celebrating Literacy next week.

In effort to support grieving students, our Student Services Department is collaborating with Transitions GriefCare, a division of Transitions LifeCare, to extend its grief counseling services to support our students. Support groups and educational offerings are available to help students develop and strengthen their ability to cope with grief’s impact. Topics include understanding normal thoughts and feelings in grief, expressing the pain and complex emotions of grief, identifying new coping strategies and adapting to change, learning ways to handle holidays and special days, and connecting with peers who can relate to similar experiences. There are going to be two important meetings coming soon for students and parents in our Health Science Career Academy. There will be a mandatory meeting on Monday, November 19^th, during both Lunches in the Auditorium for the students of the Class of 2020 in order to discuss their 2019 Summer Internship. Students need to attend this information session and attendance will be taken. In addition, there will be a Parent Alliance Meeting that will be held on Thursday, November 29^th, in Rooms 2418 and 2420 beginning at 6:00 p.m. (for parents of Freshmen and Sophomore in the Health Science Career Academy) and 6:30 p.m. (for parents of Juniors and Seniors in the Health Science Career Academy).

Please know that we continue to have representatives from universities meeting with our students during the school day. University representatives are located in the area outside of the Attendance office during both lunch periods. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about the various programs that are available, admission requirements, and financial aid. For more information on the colleges that are visiting, you can contact Ms. Carrillo in Student Services (919-233-4050 ext. 24893) or visit the Student Services website (http://adhs-student-services.weebly.com). Espero que todos hayan recibido el mensaje de voz que envié esta mañana donde compartí información sobre un incidente que tuvimos en la escuela. Como dije en ese mensaje, varios de nuestros estudiantes recibieron un mensaje que amenazaba con violencia en nuestra escuela. Tengan en cuenta que inmediatamente comenzamos a trabajar para investigar y garantizar la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes, personal y visitantes. What a week at The Drive! Our Band brought home more hardware from two competitions they participated in last weekend in Charlotte; our Chorus did an outstanding job representing Athens Drive at East Carolina University in a festival; we are preparing to induct over 100 students into the National Honor Society next week; our Seniors began ordering their Class Rings, Caps and Gowns, and other Senior items; our Men’s Soccer Team won in the First Round of the State Playoffs and advance towards the State Title; we had students running in the Regional Finals for Cross Country; we held tryouts for our Winter Sports; we held choreography practices for our Spring Musical; we had students raise donations to support a variety of organizations; we offered our students the opportunity to receive a free jacket, sweater, sweatshirt if they needed one; we created new business partnerships through our Health Science Career Academy, STEM Academy, and Business Alliance; and we wrapped up the First Quarter of teaching and learning in a positive manner to name just a few of the amazing things going on! Tomorrow, Saturday, November 3^rd, we will be representing Athens Drive at the Magnet Fair, we will have students running in the State Cross Country Championships, and our Band will be performing in its final competition at Cary Band Days at approximately 9:30 p.m. We have a lot to be proud of at Athens Drive, and I want to thank all of you for all your support in allowing us to serve your (our!) students!

Please know that we will be operating on a Two-Hour Delay schedule on Tuesday, November 6^th, due to Election Day. Our school day will begin at 9:25 a.m.

On Thursday, November 8^th, we will be hosting our Fall Band Concert in the Auditorium. Admission is free, and this is a great opportunity to hear the incredible music of our award-winning Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble.

Auditions for the Spring Musical, All Shook Up, will be held on November 29^th and November 30^th, with a Dance Call held on December 3^rd.  The Dance Workshop was hosted on Thursday, November 1^st after school in the Auditorium. An additional Audition Workshop will be led by Ms. Hayes and Mr. Santangelo on Thursday, November 8^th. Videos were made and will be available for student use at the Thursday, November 8^th workshop. During this workshop, students will go over additional audition information and help students learn how to select their audition music. For students interested in Auditioning for this year’s Musical, it is highly encouraged that they attend the Thursday, November 8^th workshop. Please know that working in conjunction with Raleigh Police and Wake County Public School Security, we practiced a Lockdown Drill this week. Our students and staff responded well, and we received positive feedback from Raleigh Police regarding our strengths and those areas to strengthen to support the safety of our students and staff. Please know that we continue to monitor and assess our procedures and practices with regards to safety to provide a safe, orderly learning environment each day.

We have adjusted our schedule for our Senior Ad deadline. If you would like to buy a space to congratulate your Senior in the Yearbook, the deadline has been extended until the end of the day on Sunday, November 4^th. Ads can be purchased through the website (www.athensdriveyearbook.weebly.com) and range in price based on size. No design ability needed, our students will create and personalize an ad just for you! Upload your photos and provide a message and then wait for the magic to happen. Once our students have created your space, they’ll email you a proof to ensure your happiness and submit for publication. Ms. Luna is out this Semester, and email is the only way to reach her regarding any Senior Ads questions.

Please know that we continue to have representatives from universities meeting with our students during the school day. ¡Qué semana tan maravillosa tuvimos en The Drive! Good Afternoon, this is Steve Mares, principal of Athens Drive Magnet High School with announcements for the upcoming week. A copy of these announcements will be posted on our school website, emailed and texted to our school families, and emailed to the Athens Drive PTSA email group.

Please know once again how proud I am to be a JAG! Students have done an outstanding job coming back to school from our missed school days last week prepared for great days of teaching and learning. We picked up and moved forward and even concluded our Spirit Week festivities this week with a great Pep Rally in the stadium for the entire student body. At the Pep Rally we finally were able to finish our Homecoming week traditions by crowning the 2018 Homecoming King and Queen. The 2018 Homecoming King and Queen are Tyrone Williamson and Angelica Luzzi. Congratulations to the first-runner ups Vishal Kasula and Jaie Love. I am proud of the fact that our students can have both a fun week(s) and also maintain a positive learning environment! I look forward to tonight’s Senior Night and last home football game of the season against Cary High School beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Athens Drive Magnet High School Food Drive sponsored by the LEO Club! The food that was donated by our Athens family members will be a huge help to our students who are supported by our Backpack Buddies program. A total of 732 pounds of food was donated during the food drive! Thank you for your support in helping our students learn the value of service.

Athens Drive Magnet High School is in the Guinness Book of World Records! On Tuesday, World Food Day, we had a group of students participate in a Rise Against Hunger meal packaging event. Rise Against Hunger is a non-profit organization and they facilitate groups of people to pack meals that are sent all over the world to help combat hunger. We were one of ten locations around the world that packaged meals for five minutes and we now are a part of the Guinness Book of World Records for the most meals packaged in five minutes! We were able to package 864 meals which will be shipped off to either Swaziland or Madagascar. As if there was any doubt, we are a World Class, Record-Breaking School!

The Senior Class will have a Class Assembly next Friday, October 26^th during Drive Time to get information regarding how to order Graduation Cap and Gown along with other great Senior items. A Jostens representative will be presenting the information so be sure to ask your Senior for it! Jostens will return on November 2^nd and again on December 6^th to take Cap and Gown orders during both lunches. You can either pay the full balance or put a $60.00 down payment and pay the balance later. There is also an option to order online for those who prefer that.

The Senior Breakfast is scheduled for Thursday, January 24^th and is done entirely by the Senior Parents, so now is the time to start preparations! There will be a Senior Parent meeting on Monday, October 22^nd at 5:30 p.m. in Mr. Remaley’s room, Room 2618, to discuss and plan this exciting event for the Seniors! Any parents interested in volunteering, please make plans to attend this meeting!

Parents of Seniors, please remember that your Senior Ads are due! If you would like to buy a space to congratulate your Senior in the Yearbook, this is the time. If our students are interested in unleashing their inner artist, we have the perfect opportunity for them—the Reflections Arts Contest. This PTSA led initiative is a great way for our students to shine. This year’s theme, “Heroes Around Me,” calls for our students’ own unique interpretation through the Arts. Categories include: dance, film, literature, music, photography, and visual arts. Look for the Reflections flyers around school and click on the QR code for submission guidelines and entry form. In addition, you can go to the Athens Drive PTSA website (athensdriveptsa.com) for information. The entry deadline is Wednesday, October 31st.

On Wednesday October 24^th, we will be administering the Pre-ACT to all Tenth-Grade students. We will operate on a Regular Bell Schedule for all students except our Sophomores, who will take the Pre-ACT from 7:25 a.m. until 12:05 p.m.

Thursday, October 25^th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium, we have our Fall Café Chorus Concert! Admission is free, and our students are amazing! This is a wonderful evening, so please come hear our incredible Choral students put on an outstanding concert.

As we continue observing National Bullying Prevention Month, we will be celebrating Unity Day on Wednesday, October 24^th to be UNITED for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. We are asking our staff and students to wear orange to come together in one message of hope and support to visibly show that we believe that no student should ever experience bullying. Make it Orange and make it end!

Auditions for the Spring Musical, All Shook Up, will be held on November 29^th and November 30^th, with a Dance Call held on December 3^rd. To prepare students, the Theatre Department will host two audition workshops. The Dance Workshop will be hosted on November 1^st after school in the Auditorium from 2:45 p.m. until 4:45 p.m. and will be led by our guest choreographer, Chasta Hamilton, owner of Stage Door Dance. During this workshop, students will be taught the audition choreography that they must perform during the Dance Call on December 3^rd. This will be the only opportunity to learn the dance directly from the choreographer before auditions occur. There will be an additional audition workshop lead by Ms. Hayes and Mr. Santangelo on November 8^th where they will go over additional audition information and how to select your audition music. For students interested in auditioning for this year’s musical, it is highly encouraged that they attend both workshops. Quiero compartir una vez más lo orgulloso que estoy de ser un JAG! Los estudiantes han hecho un excelente trabajo al regresar a la escuela de nuestros días escolares perdidos la semana pasada, preparados para grandes días de enseñanza y aprendizaje. Recogimos y avanzamos e incluso concluimos nuestras festividades de la Semana del espíritu esta semana con un gran Pep Rally en el estadio para todo el cuerpo estudiantil. En el Pep Rally, finalmente pudimos terminar nuestras tradiciones de la semana de Homecoming al coronar al Rey y la Reina de Homecoming del 2018. El Rey y la Reina de Homecoming del 2018 fueron Tyrone Williamson y Angelica Luzzi. Felicitaciones a los ganadores del segundo lugar, Vishal Kasula y Jaie Love. Estoy orgulloso del hecho de que nuestros estudiantes pueden tener una (s) semana (s) divertida (s) y también mantener un ambiente de aprendizaje positivo. Good Afternoon, this is Steve Mares, principal of Athens Drive Magnet High School with announcements for the upcoming week. A copy of these announcements will be posted on our school website, emailed and texted to our school families, and emailed to the Athens Drive PTSA email group.

What an unbelievable Fall for weather….!! I hope you all are safe, and everybody came out of this latest storm without personal injury or loss. Thank you for your understanding with regards to school closing, postponement of events, etc. The most important factor is always the safety of our students and school families!

With regards to make-up day information, please remember the following: Tomorrow, Saturday, October 13^th is NOT a make-up school day for students. Originally, Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) had announced that it was, but WCPSS announced later that it would not be using tomorrow as a student make-up day. So, please do not worry about tomorrow being a school day. This coming Friday, October 19^th, is now a full day of school for students. Originally it was an Early Release Day, but now it is being used as make-up time for students and Friday, October 19^th will be a full day of school.

Please know that our Homecoming football game against Green Hope High School that was originally scheduled for tonight, has been moved to Monday night, October 15^th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Next Friday, October 19^th, we will celebrate Senior Night at our home football game versus Cary High School. We will hold our Pep Rally at the end of the school day next Friday that was canceled for today due to the closing of school, and at the Pep Rally we will announce our Homecoming King and Queen.

Please also note that due to the changes with regards to our Homecoming football game, our SAT Prep Course that was scheduled for Monday, October 15^th, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., has been changed. It has been moved to Wednesday, October 17^th from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The Tuesday, October 16^th class will remain on schedule from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., and students can attend either class. If you have any questions with this schedule change, please contact Mr. Remaley at cremaley@wcpss.net.

Please know that we will be celebrating College Application Week next week. College Application Week activities will include: College Trivia each day (questions presented on the daily announcements, winners will receive a small prize for participation); find the mascot scavenger hunt each day (a photo/print out of one of the NC college mascots will be placed in a common area of school- when students find the mascot they can take a picture or selfie that shows the mascot and its location in the building and then present their photo in student services-first three each day receive a prize); door decorating contest (teachers decorate their classroom door for a chance to win 1st, 2nd, 3rd place); and free/reduced price college application to selected NC colleges (application stations will be set up in Ms. Carlton’s office each day). If you have any questions regarding our College Application Week celebration, please speak with Mr. Wright in Student Services.

Thursday, October 18^th, beginning at 2:30 p.m. in the Library Reference Area, we will be hosting an information session for students who are interested in the Duke Summer Program for High School students. If you are seeking to gain academic credit from renowned Duke faculty, interested in engaging deeply with a subject, hoping to spend your summer enjoying residential activities on Duke’s historic West Campus, or seeking to prepare for college and create an international network of peers, this may be of interest to you. Parents and students that are interested in this program are encouraged to attend.

As we continue observing National Bullying Prevention Month, we are asking all students to sign a pledge to STOMP Out Bullying. Students can visit the STOMP Out Bullying table on Monday, October 15^th during both “A” Lunch and “B” Lunch to sign the pledge. Also, we will be celebrating Unity Day on Wednesday, October 24^th to be UNITED for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. We are asking our staff and students to wear orange to come together in one message of hope and support to visibly show that we believe that no student should ever experience bullying. Let’s continue to find ways change the culture by putting an end to Bullying and Cyberbullying!

Please know that we continue to have representatives from universities meeting with our students during the school day. University representatives are located in the area outside of the Attendance office during both lunch periods. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about the various programs that are available, admission requirements, and financial aid. For more information on the colleges that are visiting, you can contact Ms. Carrillo in Student Services (919-233-4050 ext. 24893) or visit the Student Services website (http://adhs-student-services.weebly.com). If are students are interested in unleashing their inner artist, we have the perfect opportunity for them—the Reflections Arts Contest. This PTSA led initiative is a great way for our students to shine. This year’s theme, “Heroes Around Me,” calls for our students’ own unique interpretation through the Arts. Categories include: dance, film, literature, music, photography, and visual arts. Look for the Reflections flyers around school and click on the QR code for submission guidelines and entry form. In addition, you can go to the Athens Drive PTSA website (athensdriveptsa.com) for information. The entry deadline is Monday, October 22^nd.

I want to share exciting news regarding the grant that we have been awarded from NC GreenPower. They have awarded us (mainly a student led group of STEM Academy students!) a matching grant that will help us install a PV System here at Athens! In short, a PV System (photo voltaic) is a big solar panel (similar to the arrays you see in solar farms). The system would be hooked into the energy grid here at Athens, help us cut energy costs to the school, and provide some excellent learning opportunities for our students. It is most likely going to be positioned on the roof outside the senior hallway, both for ideal exposure to the sun and visibility to the students and staff here at the school. Pretty incredible right?!? And again, this whole process has been STUDENT DRIVEN. Originally it was thought that we would need to raise close to $15,000 that would be matched by NC GreenPower to install the PV System, but after receiving bids for the construction it is likely to be closer to $8,000.00 – $9,000.00. While we’ve started the fundraising process, I’m hoping that our entire school family can get behind this cause and help us raise this money! Whether you donate or not, I would ask that you please consider passing this message along to others who might be able to donate as well. We will be creating a plaque with the names of our biggest donors once we’ve hit our goal; so, if your spouse/brother/sister/parents/friends/coworkers/business friends work for a company that might be willing to donate to a great cause within education and would like themselves or their business to be recognized for doing so, please let them know that this is a great opportunity to do that. ¡Qué increíble ha estado el clima en este otoño… !! Espero que todos estén a salvo, y que hayan sobrevivido esta última tormenta sin lesiones ni pérdidas personales. Gracias por su comprensión con respecto al cierre de la escuela, el aplazamiento de eventos, etc. ¡El factor más importante es siempre la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes y las familias de la escuela!

Con respecto a la información sobre los días de recuperación, recuerde lo siguiente: Mañana, sábado 13 de octubre NO es un día escolar de recuperación para los estudiantes. Originalmente, el Sistema de Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Wake (WCPSS) había anunciado que sí, pero WCPSS anunció más tarde que no se usaría mañana como día de recuperación de los estudiantes. Good Afternoon, this is Steve Mares, principal of Athens Drive Magnet High School with announcements for the upcoming week. A copy of these announcements will be posted on our school website, emailed and texted to our school families, and e-mailed to the Athens Drive PTSA email group.

Next week is Homecoming Week at The Drive! Homecoming 2018 is next Friday, October 12^th and that means Spirit Week is next week! The Homecoming theme this year is Destination: Athens. Students are encouraged to participate in Spirit Days by dressing up each day: “Maui Monday” (Hawaiian shirts); “Trendy Tuesday” (dress to impress or dress like a celebrity!); “Rivalry Wednesday” (students can wear their Class Shirts—more information at the end of this paragraph!); “Theme Park Thursday” (dress like your favorite character, hero or villain); and “Orange & Blue Friday” (show your school colors and pride!).  There will be a Pep Rally at the end of the school day on Friday in Jaguar Stadium featuring the Athens award winning Marching Band, ALL Fall Sport Team recognition, performances from the Cheerleaders and Dance Team, and of course recognizing the 2018 Homecoming Court. Seniors will vote for the Homecoming Court during Drive-Time on Friday and we will crown the Homecoming King at the Pep Rally. The Homecoming Queen will be crowned at halftime of the Football game on October 12^th. Homecoming Class Shirts can be purchased on Tuesday before school, during both lunches, and after school from the Class Advisors: Freshman Class: Ms. Rodriguez-Wester in 822-06 OR Ms. Shelton in 2710 (cost is $10.00); Sophomore Class: Ms. Wilkins in 2714 OR Ms. Pipal in 1612 (cost is $10.00); Junior Class: Mr. Maxwell in 2620 (cost is $5.00); and for our Seniors: Mr. Remaley in 2618 (cost is $5.00). We are looking forward to an exciting week at The Drive!

On Monday, October 8^th, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Cafeteria, the Athens Athletic Department is hosting a BINGO Night to raise money for James Kenan High School. $15.00 will purchase 8 games of BINGO, and additional cards are available for $1.00 a game. There will be door prizes available. All proceeds from the night go to support those families recovering from Hurricane Florence. If you need additional information, please contact Coach Stephenson (astephenson4@wcpss.net) or Coach Faircloth (afaircloth@wcpss.net). What a great way to kick off our Homecoming Week!

Please remember that we will be administering the PSAT on Wednesday, October 10^th. We will operate on a regular Wednesday schedule, but those students who are taking the PSAT will be in their Testing site from the beginning of the day until 11:45 a.m.

Our Fall Chamber Music Concert will be held on Thursday, October 11^th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. Please come out and enjoy the outstanding sounds of our award-winning Band!

Also, congratulations to our Marching Band on their “First Place in Class SWEEP” in their first competition of the season at Ledford High School this past Saturday, September 29th! The Marching Band won 1st place in EVERY category in their class, including best Drum Major (Tyrone Williamson & Anna Vtipil), Percussion, Color Guard, Music, Marching, and General Effect! How about this fact to demonstrate the excellence of our Band: our Marching Band has won “First Place in Class” in at least 1 competition each season for the past 23 CONSECUTIVE YEARS! How about our amazing Band?!?! They will compete again this weekend at John Holmes High School in Denton, beginning at 7:30 p.m. I look forward to more hardware coming back to The Drive with our incredibly talented students!

I want to share exciting news regarding the grant that we have been awarded from NC GreenPower. They have awarded us (mainly a student led group of STEM Academy students!) a matching grant that will help us install a PV System here at Athens! In short, a PV System (photo voltaic) is a big solar panel (similar to the arrays you see in solar farms). The system would be hooked into the energy grid here at Athens, help us cut energy costs to the school, and provide some excellent learning opportunities for our students. It is most likely going to be positioned on the roof outside the senior hallway, both for ideal exposure to the sun and visibility to the students and staff here at the school. Pretty incredible right?!? And again, this whole process has been STUDENT DRIVEN. Originally it was thought that we would need to raise close to $15,000 that would be matched by NC GreenPower to install the PV System, but after receiving bids for the construction it is likely to be closer to $8,000.00 – $9,000.00. While we’ve started the fundraising process, I’m hoping that our entire school family can get behind this cause and help us raise this money! Whether you donate or not, I would ask that you please consider passing this message along to others who might be able to donate as well. We will be creating a plaque with the names of our biggest donors once we’ve hit our goal; so, if your spouse/brother/sister/parents/friends/coworkers/business friends work for a company that might be willing to donate to a great cause within education and would like themselves or their business to be recognized for doing so, please let them know that this is a great opportunity to do that. Chorus kicked off its butterbraid and cookie dough fundraiser this week. See any Chorus student to buy some delicious treats for the upcoming holiday season!  Mark your calendars for our upcoming Fall Cafe concert on Thursday, October 25th at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. Admission is free, so come and hear our amazing Choral students sing some great music!

As we continue observing National Bullying Prevention Month, we are asking all students to sign a pledge to STOMP Out Bullying. Visit the STOMP Out Bullying table on Monday, October 8^th, Wednesday, October 10^th, and Monday, October 15^th during both “A” and “B” Lunches to sign the pledge. Let’s change the culture by putting an end to Bullying and Cyberbullying!

If are students are interested in unleashing their inner artist, we have the perfect opportunity for them—the Reflections Arts Contest. This PTSA led initiative is a great way for our students to shine. This year’s theme, “Heroes Around Me,” calls for our students’ own unique interpretation through the Arts. Categories include: dance, film, literature, music, photography, and visual arts. Look for the Reflections flyers around school and click on the QR code for submission guidelines and entry form. In addition, you can go to the Athens Drive PTSA website (athensdriveptsa.com) for information. The entry deadline is Monday, October 22^nd.

Please remember that it is still not too late to join the PTSA! The PTSA is an amazing support to the teaching and learning at Athens Drive Magnet High School and I ask that you please join if you have not already. Thank you very much to those families that have already joined!

The Wake County College Fair is happening this Sunday, October 7^th, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the McKimmon Center at N.C. State. Over 100 colleges will attend to discuss college admission with local high school Juniors and Seniors. There will also be information sessions on topics such as Financial Aid and Preparing for College. Admission and parking are free.

Please know that we continue to have representatives from universities meeting with our students during the school day. University representatives are located in the area outside of the Attendance office during both lunch periods. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about the various programs that are available, admission requirements, and financial aid. For more information on the colleges that are visiting, you can contact Ms. Carrillo in Student Services (919-233-4050 ext. 24893) or visit the Student Services website (http://adhs-student-services.weebly.com). Upcoming visits from schools include William Peace University on October 25^th; and Appalachian State, Cal Berkeley, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro, East Carolina University, and the University of Alabama on October 31^st.

Please know that we will be celebrating College Application Week from Monday, October 15^th through Friday, October 19^th. College Application Week activities will include: College Trivia each day (questions presented on the daily announcements, winners will receive a small prize for participation); find the mascot scavenger hunt each day (a photo/print out of one of the NC college mascots will be placed in a common area of school- when students find the mascot they can take a picture or selfie that shows the mascot and its location in the building and then present their photo in student services-first three each day receive a prize); door decorating contest (teachers decorate their classroom door for a chance to win 1st, 2nd, 3rd place); and free/reduced price college application to selected NC colleges (application stations will be set up in Ms. Carlton’s office each day). If you have any questions regarding our College Application Week celebration, please speak with Mr. Wright in Student Services.

Our other Fall athletic teams are winding down their regular seasons and will begin having their Senior Nights, Conference Tournaments, and State Playoffs in the coming weeks. ¡La próxima semana es la Semana de Homecoming en The Drive! Homecoming 2018 es el próximo viernes 12 de octubre y eso significa que ¡la semana del espíritu es la próxima semana! El tema de Homecoming este año es Destino: Athens.
