Budget– Paulette Carrieri distributed current budget overview. Goal is to increase budget this year through more fundraising. Lisa Griffith, VP Ways and Means, suggested possible forms of active fundraising that will be addressed at a later date. Any transactions that normally go through the PTSA Treasurer will be delayed due to transition of old to new treasurer. The PTSA budget for the upcoming school year stands at $1,716.52. There is an outstanding check of $53.55. Due to budget cuts the PTSA will no longer fund agendas for rising freshman.
Membership-Kim Davis reported that we have 42 members as of August 20, 2013. Everyone is encouraged to join themselves and spread the word. Kim Davis reported that she attended both Freshman Academy dates and the Jag Club Booster Dinner. She intends to attend the Freshman Walk-Through, Athens Drive open house and upcoming football games. Teacher and administration participation will be tracked on a spreadsheet located at the school; our goal is 100% enrollment for all Athens Drive Staff members. All PTSA Board Members need to turn in Membership forms by September 30th, 2013.
It was brought up that we need to identify the benefits of joining PTSA and advertise those benefits in order to increase membership. It was also brought to our attention that many parents see that they already contribute to the school through Jag Club, Band Boosters, etc. and see no point in participating in the PTSA. Many parents are unaware that Athens has a functioning PTSA.
PTSA Website- Terri Voltz has stepped up as “webmaster” for the PTSA. On the website you will be able to become a member, donate to the PTSA and sign up to volunteer for specific ADHS committees and events. In order to be eligible to volunteer, you must sign up through the WCPSS. You are only able to sign-up at a Wake County Public School through an online process. The ADHS Library is an available site to do so. Minutes from every meeting can be found on the website. URL: www. athensdriveptsa.com. Paulette informed us that there have been complications regarding the PayPal services offered on the website, however those issues are being addressed and will be fixed ASAP. You can still submit an online form.
PTSA Partners with The Well for Tutoring- Paulette reported that the PTSA has partnered with The Wade Edwards Learning Lab who will offer free tutorial services to all Athens Drive students this year. The PTSA has secured a room that is specifically designated as a Tutorial Center. The room will be available on a limited basis during SMART lunch and after school, both times by appointment only. Students and parents are invited to tutor within the program. The W.E.L.L. tutors will be geared toward any student seeking academic assistance, and the student and parent volunteers will be assisting those who do not perform at grade level. It was also mentioned that any student can register to take a course at the W.E.L.L. they offer various summer classes, SAT and ACT prep courses, etc. Any tutoring received at Athens Drive shall be free of charge, but all courses taken apart from the PTSA will be priced according to the W.E.L.L. PTSA tutoring is not affiliated with NHS tutoring, but we are interested in working alongside them. Kim Davis will prepare a bulletin board that contains up to date information on the tutoring programs. Our goal is to post the same information onto the PTSA website.
Suggestions for Parent Involvement- Paulette suggested that Class Parent Representatives organize social events, not necessarily PTSA related, for parents to get to know each other and network.
Student Body Liaison- Nick Keith reported that Homecoming will be in November. When Paulette questioned Nick about who would be the PTSA contact for the newspaper he said that he will hold that position and he announced that the Oracle should be up and running by mid October.
