Athens Drive PTSA is Pleased to Announce

The First Ever Grounds Beautification Day

Saturday, October 26, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 1:00PM

Go to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080F4AABAA5-athens  to sign-up to volunteer

The PTSA Grounds Committee Chairperson, John Sykes, along with landscape designer and Athens Drive parent Alison Pockat, ASLA, have developed a long-term, seven-year, landscape improvement plan for Athens Drive High School.  The PTSA has designated October 26th as our first work day and John is currently organizing this event.  Students needing service hours (NHS, Key Club, NTHS, Scouts, or any other groups or individuals) are strongly encouraged to attend as we will be happy to sign their forms.

The PTSA is dedicated to helping Athens Drive High School be the best that it can be.  One of our goals is to build a sense of community between the home, the school and the surrounding community.  The Grounds Committee is an avenue for all parties to engage and take pride in our school.

Another PTSA goal is to provide students with enhanced learning opportunities.  As chair, John is working with school personnel to incorporate curricula from AP science, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), and the Environmental Awareness Club.  Once planted, students from a wide range of academic backgrounds will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining the outdoor learning environment throughout the school year.  Our hope is this will not only provide students with wonderful, hands-on-learning opportunities, but in addition, will help to build a sense of pride and belonging amongst our students.  If possible, we’d even like to see the Baby Jags get involved by filling bird feeders or germinating seeds for our gardens.

What to Expect on October 26
Work that day will include:

  • Planting of 50 azaleas the PTSA was awarded as part of the NC Beautiful Azalea Celebration sponsored by Capital Broadcasting   Corporation.
  • Removal of all liriope from the front garden areas.
  • Removal of all dead plants, shrubs and broken branches from the front area surrounding the library and administrative entrances.
  •  Replacement of the broken wooden path between the library and administrative entrance.
  •  Mulching the garden areas and laying playground mulch in the path between the entrances.
  • Placing gravel around modulars to aid in drainage and mud control.

How You Can be a Part of This Historic Event:

  • We need students, parents and/or guardians to donate their labor.
  • We need shovels, rakes, pitchforks, wheelbarrows and don’t forget your work gloves.
  • We need donations of bottled water, snacks, power bars, apples, bananas, ice and coolers to help keep our volunteers energized and happy.
  • MOST OF ALL, we need all of you to join with the PTSA as we work to make Athens Drive High School not only beautiful, but also the best learning  environment that we can offer our students. Come be a part of our community as we work to build JAG Pride in ADHS.
  • Go to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080F4AABAA5-athens  to sign-up to volunteer on Oct. 26.

Where:

  • Working volunteers should meet by 8:45 am in front of the school, near the library drop- box.
  • Donations of food and water should be delivered to Mrs. Finkbeiner’s office in the library.  Food should not be delivered more than 1 or 2 days prior to this event; bottled water can be dropped off starting immediately.
