Athens Drive Gardens & Grounds Committee
Athens Drive High is not only one of the larger Wake County public high schools, it also houses a public library and hosts evening adult education classes through Wake Technical Community College and Wake County Public Schools Continuing Education. The school was designed by F. Carter Williams and dedicated on April 11, 1979. Although the building has been updated and modernized in many ways, the expansive landscaping and grounds have been somewhat neglected. After 40 years, many shrubs and trees are over-grown, diseased, and need to be removed and replaced.
In 2014, an Athens Drive Grounds Committee was formed by the Athens Drive PTSA to address the problems with the campus landscaping. This group of dedicated teachers, parents, students, and community members have already been working hard to remove many plants and add some curb appeal. Groups of volunteers from various school clubs and departments are offering their unique skills to add to the new landscape design.
During the school year, the PTSA Gardens & Grounds Committee hosts two Campus Clean-Up Days, one in the Fall and one in the Spring. The purpose of these events is to clean up and beautify our school campus. Projects range from trimming overgrown trees & shrubs, planting new flowers and plants, clearing walkways and stair areas, laying down new mulch, and general trash pick-up. Parents, faculty, and students all work together to make our campus look great and inspire that Athens Drive PRIDE!
Parents and students who enjoy gardening, being outdoors, and working together are encouraged to participate during these Clean Up Days. Students can also earn In-School Service Hours for their volunteer time.
